Mortgages vary between countries and while the credit crisis and world recession are affecting the amount of money being borrowed from the banks, there are countries where the banks are continuing to lend.
For example, many of the banks in Cape Verde, Italy and Brazil continue to borrow money for mortgages to non-residents, while those in Tenerife are more restricted on lending – at least for the short term.

While each country may differ in their mortgages, as a rule, most banks will visit your property and make a valuation. The bank will then lend a percentage of the property value.
